MEMORANDUM Nov 24 2021
To: Construction Trades – Boilermakers, Carpenters, Electricians, Pipefitters
From: LamSar inc. and the Sarnia Construction Association
SUBJECT:
Construction (skilled trades) jobsite opportunities in Sarnia Lambton region
The Sarnia Construction Association is a local mixed trade Association representing contractors in the Sarnia/Lambton region. All contractor members of the Association are unionized contractors’ signatory to one or more provincial agreements in the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) Sector of the construction industry in the province of Ontario.
At this time, all skilled trades in the Sarnia Lambton region are near or at full employment. Some trades, in particular the Boilermakers, Carpenters, Electricians and Pipefitters, are now referring travelers to meet the demand for skilled trades.
The main job site driving this demand is the NOVA Chemicals Corunna site which is in the process of expanding its current operating facilities (COP3E Project) and in the process of constructing a new world scale polyethylene facility (AST2 Project) adjacent to its existing ethylene facility.
In the spring of 2022, job opportunities will further increase as major shutdowns/turnarounds are scheduled at the NOVA Corunna site, Shell Canada Inc., Styrolution Inc. and Suncor Canada (Copy of shutdown survey attached hereto – Schedule “A”). Further trade shortages are expected in the key trades listed above.
Accordingly, this memo is intended to advise interested skilled trades people outside of Sarnia Lambton that work opportunities are currently available in Sarnia/Lambton on the NOVA construction sites and will be available in 2022 at NOVA and other major refineries for scheduled spring outages in 2022.
The conditions and rates of pay on the NOVA site are subject to a project agreement. The standard working hours on site is a forty-hour work week. Overtime is worked at the rate of double time. The NOVA wage rate schedule is attached (Schedule “B”) for your review. All other sites will be subject to the current conditions in the prevailing ICI agreement for that trade or the General Presidents Maintenance Agreement (ICI wage schedules attached hereto- Schedule “C”).
Skilled trades people who are interested in working on these construction sites are asked to contact the four local unions in their area or the Sarnia locals listed below. The contact information for the Sarnia locals is shown in the attached Schedule “D”.
Thank you for your interest in working on Sarnia/Lambton job sites.
